Jan Olbrecht: Bridging Science and Elite Sports
Jan Olbrecht has a Ph.D. in physiology and biomechanics. As a training adviser to world-class athletes in swimming, triathlon, running, and rowing, his mission is twofold:
- Targeted Training: Olbrecht helps coaches focus on an athlete’s specific needs, tailoring training programs accordingly.
- Understanding Adaptations: He assists coaches in comprehending the training adaptations their methods provoke in athletes.
Olbrecht’s extensive discussions with coaches have led him to reevaluate prevailing training theories and develop more effective testing methods. Coaches challenge him to find better ways to support athletes, while he, in turn, encourages them to reflect on their practices and why they are doing things a certain way.
In the early 1980s, Olbrecht pioneered a unique non-invasive method for assessing muscular potential based on lactate measurements. This approach sheds light on athletes’ metabolic fundamentals, allowing coaches to customize training programs and periodization for each athlete individually. Simultaneously, it provides novel insights into training adaptations.
His book, “The Science of Winning,” offers an overview of this approach and its practical application in training.
For over four decades, Olbrecht has provided training advice to coaches of world-class swimmers, including Inge de Bruijn, Pieter van den Hoogenband, Marleen Veldhuis, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Kyle Chalmers, Duncan Scott, Florent Manaudou, Arno Kamminga, Ferry Weertman, Erika Brown, Molly Hannis, Jordan Crooks, Daniel Wiffen, and David Popovici. These athletes have collectively earned over 150 gold medals at Olympic Games and World Championships.
Notable athletes in other disciplines include Olympic gold-winning rowers Marit van Eupen and Kirsten van der Kolk, as well as runners Isaac Kimeli and Hugo Hay. Additionally, triathletes Luc Van Lierde (two-time Iron Hawaii winner), Kathleen Smet, Bart Aernouts, and Rutger Beke have benefited from Olbrecht’s expertise.
Beyond coaching, Olbrecht serves as a visiting lecturer at the Coaches Academy in Cologne (Germany) and has been an invited speaker for various International Sports Federations across the globe, including countries like the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, France, the UK, the US (Knoxville’s “School of Thoughts”), Australia, and Canada.
